DETROIT (April 22, 2025) - The Michigan Strategic Fund (MSF) Board today approved support for BAMF Health’s new theranostics center and radiopharmacy in downtown Detroit. The project is expected to create up to 90 jobs and generate an estimated $93.7 million in capital investment in the City of Detroit.
The Detroit Economic Growth Corporation (DEGC) was critical in securing the project after a 2.5-year attraction effort alongside the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC). The DEGC assisted BAMF Health with evaluating multiple real estate options in the city, analyzing tax impacts, demonstrating the value of a Detroit location, providing connectivity to Detroit at Work, and facilitating introductions to partners in the innovation ecosystem.
“The arrival of BAMF Health’s innovative Theranostics Center in downtown Detroit is akin to planting a seed in already fertile ground. This project will grow the city’s burgeoning medical ecosystem and bring next-generation cancer therapies to Detroiters,” said Kevin Johnson, president and CEO of the Detroit Economic Growth Corporation. “The DEGC proudly supported BAMF during our 2.5-year attraction effort alongside the MEDC. We are grateful to the MSF Board for their support of this transformative development.”
Grand Rapids-based BAMF Health, a leader in diagnosing and treating diseases such as cancer and Alzheimer’s since 2018, will establish a molecular imaging clinic, a molecular therapy clinic and a commercial manufacturing radiopharmacy at Bedrock’s 14-acre Gratiot Site campus. The facility will occupy 45,000 square feet on the first floor of the site’s 220,000-square-foot Life Science Innovation Building, the first of its kind in the country.
The facility will be equipped with specialized medical technology including MRI machines, PET/CT scanners, hot cells and cyclotrons, bringing the most advanced and comprehensive theranostics platform and treatment center to Detroit’s growing innovation district.
“This project represents the kind of high-impact medical innovation Detroit is attracting,” said David White, vice president of Business Development at the DEGC. “After working closely with BAMF Health for over two years, we’re thrilled to see them choose Detroit for their expansion. This facility will create quality jobs and provide advanced cancer treatments for patients throughout Michigan and beyond.”
The MSF Board is supporting the project with a $1.5 million Michigan Business Development Program grant and approval of a 15-year 100% SESA Exemption valued at up to $982,000 for the company’s $45 million eligible investment in personal property.
The new facility is part of Bedrock’s larger vision to transform the former Wayne County jail complex into a dynamic innovation hub focusing on life sciences, technology and entrepreneurship. BAMF Health will join other key partners at the site including Michigan Innovation Headquarters (MI-HQ), Ferris State University, Wayne State University and TechTown Detroit.
“From the very beginning, we were determined to deliver BAMF’s advanced, life-saving technology to the people of Detroit and southeast Michigan, and soon that vision will come to life,” said BAMF Health Founder and CEO Anthony Chang, PhD, in a press release last year.
BAMF Health’s clinical trial capabilities are expected to increase opportunities for partnerships with large pharmaceutical companies on new drug development and testing, further positioning Detroit and Michigan as leaders in precision medicine and radiopharmaceutical development.
