7-Part docuseries premieres February 28, 2025, showcasing the revitalization of the Paradise Valley Cultural and Entertainment District

FEBRUARY 26, 2025 (DETROIT) – The Detroit Economic Growth Corporation (DEGC) and the Downtown Development Authority (DDA) proudly present

The series debuts February 28, 2025, and will be available for streaming on the DEGC’s YouTube channel and MichiganChronicle.com through a distribution partnership with the iconic news brand.

Paradise Valley, once a thriving hub of Black business, culture and entertainment, is undergoing a transformative renewal, with significant investments to restore its vibrancy while honoring its historic significance. As the organization leading this redevelopment, DEGC and the DDA are committed to ensuring that the revitalization of Paradise Valley aligns with their mission to attract investment, create jobs and advance Detroit’s economy for all residents. Back to Paradise offers an in-depth look at the visionaries, developers, business leaders and community members shaping the district’s resurgence, reinforcing its role as a cornerstone of Detroit’s economic and cultural landscape.

“This series is more than a historical reflection – it’s a testament to Detroit’s resilience and the power of strategic investment in community-driven development,” said DEGC President and CEO Kevin Johnson. “Through ‘Back to Paradise,’ we aim to showcase not only the district’s rich past but also its promising future, inspiring Detroiters to actively participate in the city's revitalization.”

David Howell, vice president of Development Services at the DEGC and one of the series' executive producers, has served two tenures with the organization and emphasizes its ongoing commitment to inclusive development throughout Detroit.

“The DEGC made a deliberate effort to prioritize affordability in the projects we support. The Broadway Lofts redevelopment, for instance, is a $38 million investment featuring 80 residential units, with 20% designated for individuals earning 60% of the area's median income,” said Howell. “This means a server working at Fixins, earning $19-20 an hour, can afford to live in a modern mid-rise apartment just steps away from their workplace. That level of accessibility and inclusivity is critical, and we are incredibly proud of this effort.”

The docuseries will feature exclusive interviews, archival footage and behind-the-scenes perspectives from key stakeholders leading the redevelopment of Paradise Valley, showcasing how economic growth, public-private partnerships and community engagement are shaping its future.

To commemorate the premiere, a special screening will take place on February 27, 2025, at the newly renovated Harmonie Club in Detroit. Attendees will have an exclusive first look at the series in a setting that embodies the district’s revival.
