Detroit honors its backbone: 16 legacy businesses awarded $300K+ in grants

When we talk about economic growth, we can’t just focus on the shiny new. Real Detroit economic development means honoring the businesses that held us down, the ones that never left. The inaugural Detroit Legacy Business Project (DLBP) did exactly that by awarding over $300,000 in Detroit business grants to 16 long-standing local businesses. These legacy businesses have been here for 30+ years, shaping Detroit's cultural identity and providing jobs, mentorship, and stability.

As part of this effort, the program awarded two types of grants: $15,000 Council District Grants to businesses in each of Detroit’s seven council districts, and $50,000 Citywide Grants to businesses with a broader citywide impact.

This funding supports businesses that have poured decades of care into their work, often without recognition. And now, they’re getting their flowers.
