Motor City Match Business Opens on Livernois Avenue of Fashion

From Pierre Batton Vice President of Small Business Services With a cheering crowd that included Mayor Mike Duggan, Councilmember Roy McCalister and Pastor Marvin Winans, Shears & Shaves Barber Shop and Spa opened Monday on Detroit’s historic Avenue of Fashion. The upscale unisex grooming salon is a four-track Motor City Match recipient owned by industry veteran Dawn Stanford. Ms. Stanford worked as a barber for 32 years at nearby Big D. Barber and Beauty Unisex Salon before opening her own store. The Motor City Match program has helped cultivate a new generation of entrepreneurs, reactivating vacant storefronts along many of Detroit’s commercial corridors. Shears & Shaves joins current business owners on the Livernois Avenue of Fashion keeping the district’s history alive and preparing for future growth. Shears & Shaves won a total of $87,000 in grants through several rounds of Motor City Match tracks and received a $300,000 loan from Invest Detroit. The shop focuses on luxury grooming and spa services for men and women, including haircuts, coloring, styling, nail care, skin care, massage, aromatherapy and shoe shining as well as beard and mustache shaves and trims. Ms. Stanford calls Shears & Shaves a lifelong dream come true. “My longtime dream of creating a neighborhood barber and spa where people and families come together for community and camaraderie has been realized,” she said following the grand opening.
